Target Audience

Target Audience for a short film

Since there is much of an audience for a short film, its hard to say what the target audience could possibly be. This audience are commonly known as ‘film buffs’ they are the sort of people who go to short film events, go to the cinema at least twice a week or searching the web for rare copies of films, or even travel to parts of the world where some of your favourite films are featured. they are also people who collect every film they watch or the majority on either VHS or DVD. Some even go back to black and white movies or even silent! Film buffs can also be known as film avids, and there are 3 types of film avids. They are the following:

Summits: these are the most knowledgeable avids who would most likely work in the film industry for big names such as MGM, Paramount, Sony etc. Or possibly in journalism for film. These avids are most often interested in the business of the film industry, as well as the film (s) itself.

Specialists: these are the most obsessive avids. They are very critical of films that do not suit them to their taste of film. But they are the biggest collectors of films

Scatterguns: these are the least obsessive/knowledgeable of the three, they tend to enjoy films as part of a weekly routine.

Through studying the Medium of short films it is apparent it is a very niche market.meaning it is imperative that me and my group find the right target audience. With 90% of short films being made up by small non-funded film makers they try and hit hard hitting issues and social beliefs. The genre isn't meant to be an entertaining one but more of a thought provoking art form. The term 'Film buff' comes from critics who take notice of these short films and are seen as snobs, usually through stereotype.

Our film will be targeted towards a more mature audience and for either men or women, as we are looking to deal with a murder mystery and it can be quite a confusing topic. Our group is looking to re-define the medium of short film by adding a murder mystery element something, through research, hasn't been done before. Making our task of this demographic hard to forsee, but usual film buffs are 18-40 males and enjoy understanding world news and politics.

Are film "suspect" could catch the eye of all different types of lifestyle. We beilve we can target a wide range of audience's.
We think the spilt is 65% male and 35% women because are film is about murder and will be scary in parts of the film, and male's generaly go and see horror films more than women.
Social class B-C is what we are going to aim for because are film isnt what people with the class of A would go and see because of the blood, horror and the story line, soical class B is going to be are main audience with a few of C.
The race would be mixed because there's nothing in are film so bad that people from other countries would fine offisive.

Explorers, Survival and maybe Mainstreams will be are target audience in this part of the field because what reseach we have done into target audience this sort of film attracts this range of audience.
YAKS, DINK, and MICE.

We currently has a standing budget of 15£ being spent on this film!

that being, some trampish looking tracksuit bottoms, 6 cups of tea (school costa) a tea at the unsworth house hold, a cigarette, a non alcoholic beer.

Location Shots

These are the location shots we are thinking of using mainly because of the body being found in the woods and a crime scene in the woods, with the fox and hounds pub playing a key scene in our plot.

These were taking by Andrew Chappel, some very good photos!

Health and Safety Risks

This is our health and safety risks assesment for when we go out filming...The next post will be our location shots, to come shortly

Synopsis

Our short film is a murder mystery that goes by the name of 'suspect'

It starts off with a dog walker minding his own business walking his dog and throwing his dog ball for the dog to catch, the dog walker throws the ball into a ditch where the dog finds a dead body. The dog walker calls the police.

The story continues as the two main detectives are on the scene. They investigate the murder and find the victim is a man with many debt problems, but also took 100% of his parents will, which none was given to the step brother. so the main suspects are the victims step brother, a loan shark who lent the victim money and a tramp who was last seen with the victim. Things start to pipe up as the two detectives question each suspect, with the tramp giving up the proper suspect. But there is a huge twist at the end. Watch to find out!

Texual analysis on a short film

This short film im writing about is a film called 'The Black Hole'

This film has the theme of 'greed' and is very easily shown in this film. The film is about a man who is obviously living a boring life as a scanner in an office. he finds that his printer is not working and decided to kick it, where it preceeded to start working again. the printer prints a 'black hole' there is a little comedy in the film for when he puts the whole to a vending machine just to grab chocolate (there again fairly greedy). The film gives a sense of 'Karma' as at the end he starts to steal money from a safe and then decided to go into the safe to grab all the money, that is then when the black hole falls off the safe trapping him inside, Kind of like karma!

i found this video on youtube via word of mouth from a film buff.
There are many special effects used for just a shrot film, this must of been fairly time consuming.
(We decided to use a big of the greed genre in our murder mystrey with the 'step brother' getting all of the parents will)

The target audience for this film is a fairly neash audience know as film buffs, who basically own majority of released films and such. i found this video on youtube via word of mouth from a film buff.

This film will never be big enough to be released to buy, mainly because its a short film and there arent many people who will watch short films, i'd never heard of short films before i started to study media at A level.

The short film.

I have found a new group, after being put into a different class from carlos and richard.

This group consists of Robert Unsworth, Osaama Zaheer and Andrew Chappel.

Our idea (which is still in progress) consists of a murder mystrey of which a man who has many debts and a lot of issues with people is falsly killed by a certain someone (you dont see the killer till the end). There a 3 suspects one is the a brother who did not get any of his parents's will, another is a hit man, and the other is a loan shark. all these people have a linked story to the victim, in which the detective has to interrorgate each suspect.

Of course this idea was only made in the space of an hour, So more to come sooner rather than later!!!

Textual Analysis 2

This second textual analysis is a song by Eric Clapton called "tears in heaven".

This song has a specific background which relates his lyrics to real life. On march the 20Th 1991, his son Connor died from falling from a window of the 53rd-floor New York apartment of his mother's friend. Clapton, who arrived at the apartment shortly after the accident, was visibly distraught for months . He wrote this song dedicated to his son. Though this wasn't his typical style of music, it was considered more soul or slow pop due to the fact its really slow paced with calm drums, a calm voice and acoustic guitars, rather than his known style of rock with bombastic drums, distorted guitars Etc

The video starts off with an establishing shot of a beach, which then cuts to a woman running across the sand. which then cuts to Eric Clapton and his guitar.
This video is narrative based mainly because of Eric singing the lyrics of what seems like losing someone special, this is shown by Eric being in a small somewhat dark room, full of instruments just playing an acoustic guitar, with a sad face, just performing on his guitar and singing. The lyrics being said such as "Would you know my name, if i saw you in heaven, would it be the same, if i saw you in heaven" shows that its narrative that if he saw his son, would it be the same obviously, but during the video it cuts to another scene, were it looks as though two people in love, seem to look at each other through different shots such as the man looking into his rear view mirror, and then at another cut/scene a woman is looking into the camera, making it seem as though they have a connection.

During the lyrics "time can break your heart, having begging please, Begging please" there is a juxtaposition of those lyrics being said and a man looking down in shame, only to hug what looks like his daughter with an apology.

There are loads of cuts to different scenes when the lyrics start off a "beyond the door" there is a man trying to commit suicide, but then stopped by a woman, and it seems this woman is looking after him, which was something Eric Clapton couldn't do for his son, which he may be trying to relate that if only he was there sooner rather than later, maybe his son would still be alive.

The video then cuts to close up of a woman opening her eyes, which she sees a man on the floor looking in pain, this is happening when the lyrics are saying "I must be strong and carry on", after that it cuts back to Eric with various panning shots as it has all video of him then saying "cause i know, i don't belong, here in heaven" which states that he cant do anything about his sons death and that whats done is done. It then cuts to a close up of a woman hugging a man, you also see a man crying, this connotes that they are parting each other, and they happened to be a very close couple.

The end of the video you see a woman staring at another girl, with bloodshot eyes that seemed to be the result of crying, which then cuts back to a close up of Eric playing the end of his riff on his guitar, to then fade to black.

My conclusion of this essay is that, this song was a meaningful masterpiece from Eric Clapton and his unfortunate event that led to his sons death, its a slow rock/soul song and the song being about something that is lost, and with lyrics like 'would you know my name, if i saw you in heaven' stating the fact, would his son still recognise him even though hes in heaven, this is a very strong expressed feeling the artist emits from the song and lyrics.

Textual Analysis 1

The video I am analysing is a song by the foo fighters and song being My hero this song is in the rock/alternative genre, mainly due to the distortion of a guitar, bombastic drums, deep bass line and loud sometimes smooth vocals. .
This video is a narrative based song mainly because he’s narrating about his hero through song, although it could be concept based in some ways such as an idea of a vigilante attempting to be a super hero or typical citizen trying to win a girls heart, as we see at the end of the film.

The relationship between the lyrics and video match very well, since this video has a long take for the majority of the film you basically see a guy, running to places to help people the lyrics are long that say “too alarming now to talk about” this signifies that he cant stop to talk he’s got to save something/someone, also when ever the guy we see is about to save something for a member of the public the lyrics say “there goes my hero, watch him as he goes” which is perfect camera work, that’s when the music changes pace with the music going faster, but during a verse its just quiet and smooth.

During the whole song mainly the artist is just talking about his hero, obviously written through song. Also during the end of the song, you can see Dave Grohl (lead singer/guitar) looking into a tv seeing himself singing/performing. There are also close ups when the “hero” enters a new house, seeing the artists playing in the Smokey/ fiery house, this sort of image goes along saying “yeah were alright, our hero’s here now were safe” sort of thing, seeing as they are playing in a fiery house. With close ups of all the band members faces. The image of the band is looking like they are helpless when in the houses playing their music, but when ever the hero saves something their eyes are blacked out, making it seem like they are also a serious band.

This video can relate to things such as firemen, super hero’s, mainly cause of the point the song being about “my hero” these are things that fire men and super hero’s do on a daily basis.

To sum up this essay is fairly easy, this is a narrative based video, with a genre of rock/alternative, the song being about a hero saving precious things for the public, the band expressing their feelings through lyrics/video.

Start of A2/ Ideas

Its now the start of A2, and one has left the Rat Trap, that being ollie harkin, He put in alot of work for all of us to get our good grade in our course work, But has now be replaced by a one 'Kloe Cambell' !

Our ideas a re consisting off either a guy walking down a street with an instrument, playing to the song and singing at the same time, with the lyrics of the song that have a meaning are happining behind him which is one of our highlighted idea's

Or go with carlos's photography idea where everything is picture motion so it would take a good odd 5000 photos for just a 3 minute song, But a very good idea , thoroughly easy but a lot of hard work!

More to come from rat trap productions.
